The fast development of highway construction makes its effects on the natural eco logical environment more and more serious, which makes the designer to have to think in earnest about the essential effects of ecological environment on highway instruction and service and put the concept of harmonious relationship between human and nature, subsistence and development, and alteration and respect of nature into highway design. The promotion of eco type highway just indicates the enhancement of hum an beings’ eco logical value which will push forward the realization of highway sustainable development greatly. Based on ecological esthetics and ethic and from the view point of the relationship of highway and eco logical environment, the relationship of ecology and the ecosystem was explained, the definition of eco type highway and the characteristic of eco type highway landscape were discussed, which could be regarded as the guidance of highway landscape design. The principles and demands of eco types highway design were also analyzed to apply the eco logical concept to every process of highway construction including design, construction and service to realize the sustainable development of highways.
